My story
I was born in Montevideo, Uruguay, surrounded by storybooks and color pencils. At the age of 6 I moved to Santiago de Chile with my parents, where I slowly entered the world of art and design. There I obtained a Bachelor's Degree in Art at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, and later a Diploma in Illustration from the University of Chile and a Diploma in Textile Creation from the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile.
I currently spend my days between the city -Santiago- and the countryside -Talagante-, dedicated to illustration, print design and silkscreen printing. Since my student years, I have developed several exhibition, editorial, graphic and textile design projects, both individually and collaborating with other creators and brands.
Mi historia
Nací en Montevideo, Uruguay, rodeada de libros de cuentos y lápices de colores. A los 6 años emigré a Santiago de Chile con mis padres, ciudad donde me adentré de a poco en el mundo de las artes y el diseño. Ahí obtuve la Licenciatura en Arte en la Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, y más adelante un Diplomado en Ilustración de la Universidad de Chile y un Diplomado en Creación Textil de la Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile.
Actualmente paso mis días entre la ciudad -Santiago- y el campo -Talagante-, dedicada a la ilustración, el diseño de estampados y la serigrafía. Desde mis años de estudiante, he desarrollado diversos proyectos expositivos, editoriales y de diseño gráfico y textil, tanto a nivel individual, como colaborando con otros creadores y marcas.
My work
Under the artist name Lulustrator, I create illustrations and patterns that are inspired by classic and modern tales, integrating elements of nature and landscape that I observe in my travels. My love for applied arts and crafts, makes me draw inspiration from objects and artisan crafts from different eras and cultures, which fascinate me for their intricate motifs and meanings.
My style is colorful and whimsical, yet detailed and elegant. My favorite techniques are goauche, watercolor, ink and screen-printing, although I always have my computer and tablet at hand to combine traditional with digital techniques. My illustrations have been published nationally in books, fanzines, e-books and magazines.
Mi trabajo
Bajo el pseudónimo Lulustrator, creo ilustraciones y estampados que se inspiran en cuentos clásicos y actuales, integrando elementos de la naturaleza y el paisaje que observo en mis viajes. Mi amor por las artes aplicadas y los oficios manuales, hace que me inspire también en objetos y artesanías de distintas épocas y culturas, que me fascinan por sus intrincados motivos y significados.
Mi estilo es colorido y juguetón, a la vez que detallado y elegante. Mis técnicas favoritas son el gouache, la acuarela, la tinta y la serigrafía, aunque siempre tengo a mano mi computador y tablet para combinar lo análogo con lo digital. Mis ilustraciones han sido publicadas a nivel nacional en libros, fanzines, e-books y revistas.
About nina&cala
In 2021, after a year of the pandemic, I decided to create my own studio of surface design and textile screen-printing, translating my drawings to new surfaces beyond paper. Named 'nina&cala' after my two golden retriever dogs, this project is my way of uniting art, design and my love for stories, material culture and nature. Since its launch in Nov. 2021, I have designed and sold 5 collections and 4 collaborations with other brands that are outlining my own printed world. A printed world in the shape of everyday textile objects such as tablecloths, cushions, bags, shirts, dresses, scarves and more. Since the beginning of 2023, I offer my illustration and pattern design services as a freelance licensing artist to the surface design industry.
Sobre nina&cala
En 2021, después de un año de pandemia decidí crear mi propio estudio de diseño de superficies y serigrafía textil, llevando mis dibujos a nuevos formatos más allá del papel. Nombrado "nina&cala" en honor a mis dos perritas golden retriever, este proyecto es mi manera de unir arte, diseño y mi amor por las historias, la cultura material y la naturaleza. Desde su lanzamiento en Noviembre de 2021, he diseñado y comercializado 5 colecciones y 4 colaboraciones con otras marcas que van dibujando mi propio mundo estampado. Un mundo estampado en forma de objetos textiles de uso cotidiano tales como manteles, cojines, bolsos, camiseras, vestidos, pañuelos y más. Desde comienzos de 2023, ofrezco mis servicios de ilustración y diseño de patterns como artista independiente a la industria del diseño de superficies.
